Deanne Carloni, a senior from Greendale who has played the violin since third grade, has been awarded the 2013 Richard G. Gaarder Award by the Wisconsin Music Educators Association.

RHA's mission is to bring "leadership and programs to foster community and to provide social, cultural and intellectual development." The board also reviews and enforces housing policies.

The Warhawk Ambassadors are a hand-selected group of ambitious, involved students chosen by the chancellor to host at prestigious events and represent the student body.

About 150 students from the University of Wisconsin System presented undergraduate research at the State Capitol in Madison on April 17. The annual event, known as "Posters in the Rotunda," allows students and their faculty advisers to share their findings on a variety of important topics with legislators, state leaders, alumni, and other supporters.

Suzanne Knight, a social work major from Mount Prospect, Ill., has been named Intern of the Month at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Knight works as an administrative intern for the Juvenile Justice and Mental Health Divisions of the Rock County Department of Human Services in Janesville.

The Hawk Squad provides orientation programming for new students and their families. Duties include leading tours, holding small group meetings with students during Plan-It Purple (summer orientation and registration program), and participating in family programming and other campus events.

At the NCAA Division III championships, held March 20-23 in Shenandoah, Texas, Spaay, from Neenah, Wis., became the first UW-Whitewater swimmer or diver to win a national title.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team won the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship held March 22-23 at Kachel Gym in Whitewater, Wis.

Kelsey Welke, an international journalism major from Burlington, Wis., has been named University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Intern of the Month for February 2013. Welke worked with Andrejka Photography as an assistant photographer and personal assistant on Mackinac Island over the summer.

When it comes to performance venues, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. Student musicians at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater have been invited to play at Carnegie Hall, the prestigious concert auditorium in New York City. “This opportunity pushes us into the top tier of wind band programs,” said Glenn Hayes, conductor and professor of music. “Carnegie Hall is one of the most renowned performance sites in the entire world, especially for classical music. The stage is legendary. I could not be more proud of how students have worked.” These 54 students, who make up the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at UW-Whitewater, will perform Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. as part of the New York Wind Band Festival. The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recently released its selections for 2012 fall All-Conference athletes. Thirty-eight athletes at UW-Whitewater were named. “Being named WIAC All-Conference is special because not only do these individuals have great athletic skill, but they also need to stay healthy throughout the season, have a strong sense of teamwork and be suited to handle the pressure of being good,” said Paul Plinske, UW-Whitewater athletic director.
