UW-Whitewater student musicians to perform at Carnegie Hall

When it comes to performance venues, it doesn’t get much bigger than this. Student musicians at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater have been invited to play at Carnegie Hall, the prestigious concert auditorium in New York City. “This opportunity pushes us into the top tier of wind band programs,” said Glenn Hayes, conductor and professor of music. “Carnegie Hall is one of the most renowned performance sites in the entire world, especially for classical music. The stage is legendary. I could not be more proud of how students have worked.” These 54 students, who make up the Symphonic Wind Ensemble at UW-Whitewater, will perform Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. as part of the New York Wind Band Festival. UW-Whitewater represented well in WIAC All-Conference selections

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recently released its selections for 2012 fall All-Conference athletes. Thirty-eight athletes at UW-Whitewater were named. “Being named WIAC All-Conference is special because not only do these individuals have great athletic skill, but they also need to stay healthy throughout the season, have a strong sense of teamwork and be suited to handle the pressure of being good,” said Paul Plinske, UW-Whitewater athletic director. Whitewater is well-known throughout the state and the country for producing championship athletes, and this season proved to be no different. Among those named were:

The Warhawk men’s soccer team recently wrapped up their season, finishing 8-5-3 overall, and 2-1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Local athletes included:

UW-Whitewater Women’s Bowling Team Off to Solid Start

The Warhawk women bowlers, ranked 14th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Top 20 preseason poll, have finished in the top five in every competition this season. Head Coach Leann Eimermann is excited to see how far her team can go. “This is the first season that we have a chance to make it to the NCAA Nationals because the women have the experience and talent needed to compete with the top teams in the nation,” Eimermann said. Nicole Thalacker, a public relations major from Janesville, Wis., was named Intern of the Month for September at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She interns with the Milwaukee Brewers as a consumer relations assistant.

UW-Whitewater Men’s Tennis Looks Forward to Regular Season

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has announced the roster for the 2012-13 Warhawk men’s tennis team. “This season we have assembled the most raw talent that we’ve seen in recent years. The schedule is by far the toughest, which will be a good test for us when nationals roll around. I am very excited to see how far these men can go,” said Frank Barnes, men’s tennis coach. Katelyn Wurtz, a special education major from Woodstock, Ill., has been named Intern of the Month for November at UW-Whitewater. Wurtz works with SEAL, the Student Entertainment Awareness League, as a management intern.

UW-Whitewater Women’s Tennis Team Dominates Conference Schedule, Prepares for Spring Competition

After winning its conference championship, the UW-Whitewater women’s tennis team hopes to keep the momentum going into the spring season. The team, which went 10-0, won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament with the fourth most dominating performance in WIAC history. This is the sixth consecutive WIAC championship for the Warhawks. Local athletes include:

Andrew Hoeft took his job working at a grocery store and turned it into an innovation that could change the industry. That is the opinion of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization (CEO), which awarded Hoeft the first-ever Disruptive Student Innovator of the Year award at its national conference in Chicago.

Defending Champion Wheelchair Basketball Teams Host National Tournament

The practice gyms at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater are filled with the dribble, swish, and crash of Warhawk wheelchair basketball teams as they prepare for the new season. The men’s and women’s teams both won national championships last season, and they’ll face tough competition at a home tournament Nov. 16 and 17 at Kachel Fieldhouse. UW-Whitewater women’s volleyball team heads to the WIAC tourney

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team finished the 2012 regular season by winning second place in conference. The team is ranked eighteenth in the nation. The Warhawks, now 24-10, will compete in the WIAC Tournament Nov. 2-3 in Stevens Point. As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, UW-Whitewater earns a bye in the first round and will face the winner of the matchup between UW-Stout (No. 6) and UW-Eau Claire (No. 3). Local Warhawks include:

Warhawk Golf Team Finishes Strong Season

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team recently completed a successful 2012 season, taking first place at the North Chicago, Oshkosh and Whitewater tournaments. The team had a chance to go to nationals in Florida, but lost to UW-Stout by one stroke at the WIAC tournament at Bull’s Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids on Oct. 7. The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team clinched the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a 4-0 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks are now 12-4-1 overall and 7-0-0 in league play. The following local women are on the 2012 roster:

Whitewater’s new resident assistants are ready for another year

Each residence hall on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus is welcoming not only new students, but also a new staff of resident assistants to help on-campus residents with everything from homework to social living. “Students selected for the RA position are simply the best of the best. A program offered to incoming students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is giving participants a jump-start in campus involvement.
