Andrew Hoeft wins national entrepreneurship award

Andrew Hoeft took his job working at a grocery store and turned it into an innovation that could change the industry. That is the opinion of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization (CEO), which awarded Hoeft the first-ever Disruptive Student Innovator of the Year award at its national conference in Chicago.

Defending Champion Wheelchair Basketball Teams Host National Tournament

The practice gyms at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater are filled with the dribble, swish, and crash of Warhawk wheelchair basketball teams as they prepare for the new season. The men’s and women’s teams both won national championships last season, and they’ll face tough competition at a home tournament Nov. 16 and 17 at Kachel Fieldhouse. With more than 2,400 new students on campus this fall, the First Year Experience office knows how important it is to make a great first impression. That’s where the Hawk Squad comes in. Nine upperclassmen, including the following local students, are on this year’s squad:

UW-Whitewater women’s volleyball team heads to the WIAC tourney

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater volleyball team finished the 2012 regular season by winning second place in conference. The team is ranked eighteenth in the nation. The Warhawks, now 24-10, will compete in the WIAC Tournament Nov. 2-3 in Stevens Point. As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, UW-Whitewater earns a bye in the first round and will face the winner of the matchup between UW-Stout (No. 6) and UW-Eau Claire (No. 3). Local Warhawks include:

Warhawk Golf Team Finishes Strong Season

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team recently completed a successful 2012 season, taking first place at the North Chicago, Oshkosh and Whitewater tournaments. The team had a chance to go to nationals in Florida, but lost to UW-Stout by one stroke at the WIAC tournament at Bull’s Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids on Oct. 7. Local players contributing to the strong season include:

Warhawk women’s soccer team clinches WIAC title

The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team clinched the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a 4-0 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks are now 12-4-1 overall and 7-0-0 in league play. The following local women are on the 2012 roster:

Whitewater’s new resident assistants are ready for another year

Each residence hall on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus is welcoming not only new students, but also a new staff of resident assistants to help on-campus residents with everything from homework to social living. “Students selected for the RA position are simply the best of the best. They excel both academically and socially,” said Trelana Daniel, an assistant director of residence life. There are 122 resident assistants, including:

Whitewater Student Government names new executive board

With the fall semester underway, the Whitewater Student Government (WSG) executive board has taken on the responsibilities of governing the more than 12,000 students who attend UW-Whitewater. WSG’s role is to actively assess and serve the needs of UW-Whitewater students by providing an open forum atmosphere as well as being a bridge between students, student leaders and campus administration. “Many students don’t realize the impact WSG has on this campus,” said Jan Bilgen, WSG adviser. “This executive board works directly with the chancellor, helping to make every decision from menu options to building remodels, like the University Center.” Local students named to the executive board include:

"Story Time with Willie” Homecoming events begin Oct. 10

From spirit competitions to the parade, this year’s homecoming events at UW-Whitewater will focus on literacy among American children. “Story Time with Willie” Homecoming runs Oct. 10 – 20, and will shower campus in children’s literature, from classic tales to modern favorites. With only a few weeks to go, the student-led Homecoming Steering Committee is busy organizing and planning. “These volunteers commit to extensive training and to creating a homecoming experience that is unforgettable,” said Kimberly Clarksen, leadership adviser. “Their goal is to create memories for all students that will connect them to UW-Whitewater for years beyond graduation.” Local students on the committee include:

UW-Whitewater Residence Hall Association Announces 2012-13 Executive Board

Seven UW-Whitewater students have been elected to the executive board of the 2012-13 Residence Hall Association, which oversees 13 residence halls on campus and two apartment buildings that house students. “The seven students that have been elected to these positions are really the cream of the crop,” said Terry Tumbarello, associate director of residence life. “UW-Whitewater has more than 4,300 students living on campus. These seven officials have been selected from that group not only for their grades and ability, but for their exceptional leadership skills.” This year’s board members are:
