Wonder Lake's Matthys Earns Spot in NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships

2017 Feb 23

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater junior Michaela Matthys, a native of Wonder Lake, IL, will compete in the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, which are scheduled to take place March 15-18 at Conroe ISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas.

Matthys, a graduate of McHenry West High School, qualified 14th in the 100-yard butterfly with her school-record time of 55.80 seconds posted at last week's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship meet. Her mark, which was also a meet record time, helped her capture her third consecutive conference title in the event.

Matthys finished 13th nationally in the 100-yard butterfly as a freshman in 2015 to earn honorable mention All-America accolades.

By qualifying in one event, Matthys is also eligible to compete in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard freestyle. She ranks 30th in the field in the 50 freestyle with a school-record result of 23.77 seconds, and is 36th in the 100 breaststroke with a top time of 1:05.57.

For her career, Matthys is a two-time All-American and five-time WIAC champion. She currently owns or is a part of seven program records and three Williams Center Pool records.
