Waunakee Native Denu Earns All-WIAC Track and Field Honors at UW-Whitewater

Jared Denu, a accounting major and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's track and field team, garnered All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference accolades by virtue of his performance(s) at the WIAC Outdoor Championships on May 1-2.

Conference champions are named to the first team, runners-up are on the second team and third-place finishers are tabbed honorable mention.

The group helped the Warhawks place second at the outdoor meet, the program's highest finish since 2007.

Senior captain Dawson Miller (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) established a WIAC Championship record with a time of 8:57.89 to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the third consecutive year. He became the first individual in WIAC history to claim the title in the event in three straight seasons.

Junior Zach Stockheimer (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and freshman Robert Starnes (Green Bay, Wis./Preble) placed third in their respective events. Stockheimer recorded a team season-best mark of 179-03 in the hammer throw, while Starnes tallied a personal-best leap of 23-09.50 in the long jump.

Freshman Mike Cournia (Waukesha, Wis./South) highlighted the second day for UW-Whitewater, claiming the championship in the triple jump with a mark of 49-06.25.

Runners-up included senior captain Mike Judd (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence), freshmen Theron Baumann (Monona Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and Starnes. Judd placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a team season best time of 14.73. Baumann finished second in the shot put with a 53-02.25, while Starnes placed in the same spot in the high jump with a result of 6-09.50.

Baumann placed third in the discus throw with a 163-10, and Cournia finished third in the high jump with a personal-best mark of 6-07.50.

Senior Bryce Rudebeck (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union), freshman Elijah Garcia (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail), freshman Kyle Martinelli (Milton, Wis./Milton) and senior captain Jared Denu (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) finished as runner-up in the 4x400-meter relay with a team season best of 3:16.61.

UW-Whitewater will compete in a pair of qualifying meets this weekend before heading to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships May 21-23 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.
