Wales's Schueler Earns Spot on 2017 UW-Whitewater Women's Soccer Roster

2017 Aug 29

Adria Schueler, a native of Wales, WI, and graduate of Mukwanago High School, will compete for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team during the 2017 season, which begins this weekend.

Schueler, a senior at UW-Whitewater, is majoring in accounting.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team has all the ingredients to be a national contender in 2017.

Sixth-year head coach Ryan Quamme, who has coached four Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship teams in his five years at UW-Whitewater, is confident in that.

"This might be the deepest team we've had since I've taken over as coach, and our overall team speed has increased as a result of it."

The Warhawks are coming off a 22-win season, the most in school history, a sixth straight NCAA Division III Championship appearance, their sixth WIAC regular season title in the last seven years and their fourth WIAC Tournament title in the last five seasons.

The Warhawks, picked by the league's coaches and sports information directors to win the league title, have high expectations for another successful year.

The 2016 squad featured three of the program's most successful players, Carina Krausert (Delafield, Wis./Catholic Memorial), Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek). The senior trio went to 77-12-4 during their four years, winning three WIAC regular season titles and three WIAC tournament titles. Krausert was a force and leader on the back line, while Pottle finished her career ranked fourth in career assists and fifth in career goals. Reid, a two-year All-American, wrapped up her career as the school's all-time leading point and goal scorer.

In the absence of those three players, Quamme has noticed some new faces emerging as leaders. Seniors Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South), Devin Polk and Morgan Beaty (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb), along with juniors Leah Nehila (Round Lake, Ill./Grant Community) and Mackenzie Serbousek(Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie), have stepped up to lead the 2017 team.

Lesperance, Polk and Serbousek were all starters last season. Lesperance, a midfielder, is the top returning goal scorer from a year ago, notching a career-high 10 goals to go along with four assists. Polk, in her second year with the team after transferring from the University of Findlay (Ohio), played in all 24 of the Warhawks' games last season, scoring three goals to go along with one assist. Serbousek chipped in three goals and one assist last year in 22 games.

Beaty, a key player in each of her first three seasons, has scored nine goals and tallied 13 assists in her career. Nehila, a key reserve last season, helped the defense hold the opponents to just 16 goals in 24 games.

Coach Quamme cited several other players, including junior forward Emily Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee). Mouille scored three goals and added four assists last season.

"Emily came back very fit, in great shape and ready to go," Quamme said.

Another junior forward, Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick), returns to the Warhawk attack. Schonert set a school record for assists in one season last year with 13.

Quamme added, "We might be deepest at the forward position. Along with Mouille and Schonert, we have Jamie Haertl, Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) and Meghan Riordan (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) that will earn minutes. We also have freshman Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere), who can flat out fly."

Overall, the coaching staff is very excited about their returning players and the 12 freshmen they have added to the roster.

"Our overall talent, speed and soccer IQ are very strong and now we add in five to six freshmen that could contribute right away," Quamme said. "We are very excited."

In the netk Quamme expects that freshman Paige Patera (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and sophomore Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) will really push returning starter Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy), who had a breakout freshman year allowing only 11 goals while making 82 saves and tallying 10 shutouts.

With some lofty goals on their list, the team has decided their motto for this season in "Believe". Although it is young and might take some bumps, according to their head coach, Quamme feels this team can reach those goals.

The 2017 season starts this weekend when the Warhawks travel to Duluth, Minn., for games against Gustavus Adolphus on Friday and St. Scholastica on Sunday. UW-W will play three more on the road at Loras (Iowa), St. Catherine (Minn.) and Concordia (Wis.), before opening the season with the "W Challenge" at home on Sept. 16-17. The Warhawks will face Wittenberg (Ohio) in their first match of the tournament before playing either 2017 NCAA qualifier Illinois Wesleyan or 2017 NCAA Champion Washington University (Mo.).

The Warhawks will play three more non-conference games before opening league play on Sept. 30, when they travel to UW-Stout. After that, two non-conference games are sandwiched in the middle of UW-W's remaining six conference games.

Quamme expects tough competition across the board in the WIAC, but noted that UW-La Crosse and UW-Eau Claire return a solid core of players from last year and will be primed for the season.
