UW-Whitewater's Starnes Named Division III National Athlete of the Week

2016 Feb 9

Robert Starnes, a native of Green Bay, WI, and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's track and field team, has been selected as the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for competition from Feb. 1-7.

Starnes tallied a career-best mark of 24-00.25 (7.32 meters) in the long jump to win the event and help the Warhawks place first at the seven-team Pointer Invitational. His result currently ranks No. 1 in NCAA Division III.

Starnes, who is also tied atop the national board in the high jump, is a three-time All-American. He finished fifth in the indoor long jump in 2015 before claiming the national title in the outdoor high jump and placing third in the outdoor long jump. Starnes currently hold school records in both the indoor and outdoor high jump.

Earlier today, Starnes was named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week for his performance. He is majoring in communication at UW-Whitewater.

Starnes is the team's second national athlete of the week honoree. Sophomore Parker Witt garnered the same accolade in January.

UW-Whitewater continues action this Saturday at the WIAC Quad at UW-Stevens Point. Events begin at noon.
