UW-Whitewater's Slack Tabbed Scholastic All-America in Gymnastics

2016 Jul 25

Christina Slack, a native of Albrightsville, PA, and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team, was one of nine Warhawks to be recognized as Scholastic All-America by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women.

UW-Whitewater was designated as a Scholastic All-America team thanks to its 3.25 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The Warhawks ranked 50th out of 74 collegiate gymnastics programs of all levels in team GPA.

In addition to the team recognition, seniors Steffi Heuer (Clarksville, Tenn./Middle College at APSU), Hannah Lee (Clarksville, Tenn./Clarksville), Megan Love (Henrico, Va./Godwin), juniors Katie Fiorilli (Solon, Ohio/Solon), Mackenzie Smith (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther), sophomores Kate Mierow (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central), Christina Slack (Albrightsville, Pa./Jim Thorpe), freshmen Abby Helmke (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Franchesca Hutton (Shakopee, Minn./Main Street School of Performing Arts) garnered Scholastic All-America accolades. Heuer, Lee, Love, Fiorilli, Mierow and Slack each earned the same honor in 2014-15.

All nine student-athletes helped UW-Whitewater finish as runner-up at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/National Collegiate Gymnastics Association West Region Championships and place third at the NCGA National Team Championships.

Lee and Love maintained perfect 4.0 GPAs during the 2015-16 academic year. Heuer, Lee and Love were named UW-Whitewater Chancellor's Scholar-Athletes and NCGA Academic All-Americans.

Lee became the fourth College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America selection in program history last month. She also earned the WIAC Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award and tied for seventh on the balance beam at the NCGA Championships to earn second team All-America recognition.

Love competed on the uneven parallel bars, balance beam and floor exercise for the Warhawks in 2016. Heuer (3.57 GPA), a 2015 All-American, took part in four meets during the year.

Fiorilli (3.75 cumulative) and Smith (3.61) each recorded national titles in 2016. Fiorilli posted All-America honors by tying for first on the vault, placing second in the all-around and tying for seventh on the bars. Smith qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship in Minneapolis on the bars after winning the NCGA national championship on the apparatus.

Mierow competed in five meets during the season, including three on the balance beam, and Slack took part in the bars in the team's season-opening meet at UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 8.

Hutton qualified for the NCGA Championships on the balance beam after earning All-WIAC accolades on the beam with a fifth-place showing. Helmke did not compete in 2016.

Slack is majoring in chemistry.
