UW-Whitewater's Gonio Selected Academic All-NTCA

2015 Jun 25

Karissa Gonio, a special education major, native of Algonquin, Ill., and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater bowling team, garnered Academic All-National Tenpin Coaches Association honorable mention, the organization announced earlier this week.

Senior Dayna Mackie (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glendale Heights), juniors Lindsay Rusch (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly), Jaymi Watson (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper), sophomore Ashleigh Miller (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township), freshmen Karissa Gonio (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown), Jodi Newhauser (Campbellsport, Wis./St. Mary's Springs) and Sarah Paasch (Sheboygan, Wis.) were all recognized by the NTCA. Mackie, Rusch, Watson and Miller all received the same accolades a season ago.

All seven helped the Warhawks place third at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season. UW-Whitewater was the lone Division II or III representative competing at the national tournament. All other teams were from Division I institutions. Rusch was named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of play.

The Warhawks finished the season ranked first in the NTCA's Division II/III Poll and sixth in the poll covering all levels of college bowling.

Mackie was also selected as a Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete after competing for four years and carrying a cumulative grade point average above a 3.25.

A total of 163 student-athletes from 32 institutions were named Academic All-NTCA. To be eligible, student-athletes must have maintained a 3.40 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

For inclusion on the first, second or third teams, student-athletes must have received votes for All-America honors at the conclusion of the season in addition to carrying at least a 3.40 GPA.
