UW-Whitewater's Goebel Recognized for Academics

Brittany Goebel, a native of McHenry, IL, and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater tennis program, was one of 10 Warhawks named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes, the organization announced Thursday, July 16.

Seniors Amanda Dick (Kenosha, Wis./St. Joseph Catholic Academy), Emily Sodemann (Janesville, Wis./Parker), juniors Caitlin Fitzgerald (Loves Park, Ill./Belvidere North), Ashley Miller (Racine, Wis./Union Grove), sophomore Amy Upthagrove (Muskego, Wis./Muskego), freshmen Alicia Beck (Bismarck, N.D./St. Mary's Central) and Brittany Goebel (McHenry, Ill./West) of the women's team were honored by the ITA. Miller has now been selected three times, while Sodemann is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete.

Junior Jake Humphreys (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper), sophomore Scott Butler (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and freshman Zane Navratil (Racine, Wis./The Prairie School) were recognized on the men's side. Butler is now a two-time honoree.

To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, student-athletes must have been a varsity letter winner, maintained a grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year and been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

The women finished the 2014-15 season ranked 26th in NCAA Division III by the ITA after reaching the third round of the NCAA Team Tournament. The Warhawks won their eighth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and set a school record for dual match wins in a season with a 24-5 record.

The men finished the campaign in the second round of the NCAA Team Tournament with a 22-8 dual match record. Humphreys became the first player in program history to reach the quarterfinals in singles of the NCAA Individual Tournament. UW-Whitewater was ranked No. 26 in the final ITA national poll.
