UW-Whitewater's Fiorilli Earns All-America Honors in Gymnastics

2016 Mar 22

Katie Fiorilli, a native of Solon, Ohio, and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics program, was one of seven Warhawks to combine for 12 All-America honors over the weekend at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championships at The College at Brockport in Brockport, N.Y.

All seven gymnasts helped UW-Whitewater place third as a team at the NCGA Championships, the program's eighth straight top three finish.

On Friday, junior Katie Fiorilli (Solon, Ohio/Solon) totaled a 38.675, second best in program history, in the all-around competition to tie with UW-La Crosse's Samantha Wiekamp for second, just 125 thousandths of a point shy of the title. Junior Courtney Pickett (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) finished fifth in the all-around with a total of 38.450, and was announced Monday as an alternate at the NCAA Minneapolis Regional on April 2 at the University of Minnesota.

On Saturday, the Warhawks claimed three individual national championships.

On the uneven bars, first-year Warhawk Mackenzie Smith (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) was co-champion with UW-La Crosse's Dani Barmore after posting a school record mark of 9.825 in the first rotation of the finals.

Smith was selected this week to compete at the NCAA Minneapolis Regional in the event. She will be the first UW-Whitewater gymnast in program history to compete in a specialist event at an NCAA regional meet.

Freshman Lisa O'Donnell (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) posted a 9.85, the highest score in the school record book, in her first collegiate national individual championships to share the floor title with Gustavus Adolphus' Alexandra Kopp. O'Donnell is UW-Whitewater's first-ever national championship on the floor, and head coach Jennifer Regan has now coached an individual national champion in every event. Pickett tied for fifth in the event with a 9.775.

On the vault, Fiorilli secured her second consecutive title on the vault with a school record tally of 9.875 ending the meet on a high note as the very last gymnast to go on the event. Her score tied Samantha Wiekamp from earlier in the meet to share the title. Fiorilli also tied for seventh on the uneven bars with a score of 9.725 to earn her third career All-America honor in the event. In three years as a Warhawk, Fiorilli has 10 All-America honors and five individual national titles.

Three UW-Whitewater gymnasts took home All-America accolades from the balance beam, including Kristin Shackleton (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central), who earned first team recognition with a score of 9.725. Hannah Lee (Clarksville, Tenn./Clarksville) tied for seventh with a routine scoring 9.65, and Pickett was ninth with a 9.625. Pickett has nine All-America honors in her three years as a Warhawk.

Fiorilli is majoring in communication sciences and disorders at UW-Whitewater.
