2015 May 28

Jared Denu, a native of Waunakee, WI, and accounting major at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, earned Capital One Academic All-District 6 Cross Country/Track and Field first team honors as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, the organization announced Friday, May 22.

Senior Jared Denu (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee), a captain for the Warhawks' men's track and field team, is now a three-time Academic All-District pick. Senior Shelby Mahr (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd), a captain on the women's team, has now been named Academic All-District twice.

Denu carried a 3.65 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, and is majoring in accounting. He will graduate in December. A three-time United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic selection, Denu won the NCAA Elite 89 Award at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. He has participated in Reading With The Warhawks and has volunteered as an exam proctor and tutor.

A four-time All-American, Denu was a member of two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference indoor championship 4x400-meter relays. He garnered eight all-conference accolades, and holds three school records and one Williams Center record.

Mahr finished her degree in special education in May and maintained a GPA of 3.97. A two-time recipient of the prestigious WIAC Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award, Mahr was tabbed All-Academic by the USTFCCCA three times. She was a third team Academic All-American in 2014.

Mahr has been active as a volunteer with Reading With The Warhawks, Project Linus and Best Buddies. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi and the International Honor Society in Education.

A nine-time All-American, Mahr also picked up seven all-conference honors, and holds four school records in throwing events. She recently finished as national runner-up in the discus throw with a school record result.

Both Mahr and Denu were named Chancellor's Scholar-Athletes in April.

Both student-athletes will be eligible to earn Academic All-America, which will be announced June 23.
