UW-Whitewater's Baumann Qualifies for NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

2016 May 23

Theron Baumann, a native of Monona Grove, WI, and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater track and field program, is one of 12 Warhawks to qualify in 11 events at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field championships, which take place Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28, at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

The Warhawk men enter the week slotted third in the nation by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association rankings. Eight men will compete in eight events, including one relay.

Four UW-Whitewater women earned bids in three different events.

Sophomores Theron Baumann (Monona Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and Parker Witt (Appleton, Wis./North) lead the men, qualifying for two different events apiece.

Baumann qualified fifth in the shot put with a season-best result of 56-11.25 (17.35 meters), and reached the discus with a career-best mark of 168-08 (51.41 meters), good for the fifth-highest in the field. He claimed the indoor national championship in the shot put and is a three-time All-American in the event. He was also a national participant in the discus in 2015.

Witt will compete in the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the second straight outdoor season. His time of 10.54 seconds in the 100 is fifth in the country, while his result of 21.38 in the 200 ranks fifth. Witt claimed the indoor national title in the 200 and is a two-time All-American and now six-time NCAA qualifier.

Senior Mike Judd (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) returns to the NCAA field in the 110-meter hurdles with a school record time of 14.36, good for ninth in the field. He is now a four-time national qualifier in the event, and was an All-American in the indoor 60-meter hurdles in 2012.

Senior Zach Stockheimer (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) and sophomore Cameron MaGee (Richland Center, Wis./Ithaca) will compete in the hammer throw and high jump, respectively. Competing for the second straight year in the hammer, Stockheimer's personal record mark of 193-11 (59.10 meters) ranks fifth among competitors, and he garnered All-America accolades in the weight throw during the indoor campaign. MaGee is sixth in the high jump with a personal-best 6-09.75 (2.08 meters). He also qualified in the high jump during the indoor season.

The Warhawks' 4x100-meter relay team of juniors Connor Larson (St. Charles, Ill./North), Grant Loess (St. Charles, Ill./North), Zak Loess (St. Charles, Ill./North) and Witt qualified 15th with a time of 41.45.

Junior Amanda Strupp (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) leads women after qualifying in a pair of throwing events. She qualified 15th in the discus with a personal record 149-08 (45.63 meters) and earned the final spot in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 170-02 (51.88 meters).

Junior Meredith Heller (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall) and senior Candice Wayne (West Bend, Wis./West) reached the 400-meter hurdles at 11th and 12th in the nation, respectively. Heller owns a top time of 1:01.79, while Wayne is close behind at 1:01.81. Wayne competed at last season's outdoor meet in the 400 hurdles.

Junior Genny Rose Stringer (Assumption, Ill./Assumption) returns to the discus field for the third straight season. She owns a personal record toss of 163-08 (49.90 meters), good for fourth in the country. She was an All-American in the event in 2014.

Last season, the Warhawk men matched their highest-ever placement at a national meet with a runner-up finish. The women tied for 22nd overall.
