Tiffany Nieves awarded study abroad scholarship from UW-Whitewater

2017 Mar 8

Tiffany Nieves from Tinley Park, Ill., who is studying elementary education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has received a scholarship to complete her last semester teaching abroad.

"Education majors at UW-Whitewater have the opportunity to complete part of their student-teaching requirements in another country," said Katy Heyning, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. "This is a valuable opportunity for students to learn about the culture and educational systems of another country and gain competence working with learners from diverse backgrounds."

The students participating in the Sweden program are placed in a Swedish school with a cooperating teacher for four weeks. Students teach full days; they prepare units, lesson plans and teach various periods throughout the day.

Students who complete international student teaching in Jamaica spend three to four weeks teaching in a rural Jamaican school. In their student teaching placement, they assume responsibilities for assessing, planning, and educating the students in their classroom.

Tiffany will be doing her student teaching in Jamaica for part of the spring semester.
