Sussex's Gumina of UW-Whitewater Football Tabbed Semifinalist for Prestigious Trophy

Anton Gumina, a native of Sussex, Wis., graduate of Hamilton High School and senior at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, is one of 181 semifinalists in all of college football for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation and is presented by Fidelity Investments.

Gumina, a tight end, is one of only 33 nominees from NCAA Division III and one of four from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The NFF will announce the 12-14 finalists for the award on Nov. 1. Each of the finalists will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship, membership in the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class presented by Fidelity Investments and an invitation to attend the 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 5 in New York City. The winner of the award will be announced that night and receive another $7,000 in postgraduate scholarship money for a total of $25,000.

Flood, who is majoring in biology with an emphasis in pre-biomedical professions, entered the 2017-18 academic year with a 3.59 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. He is a two-time member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Honor Roll and has been honored on the Dean's List at UW-Whitewater.

A three-year starter and four-year contributor, Gumina has been a part of two WIAC championships, one national championship, one semifinal appearance in the NCAA Division III Playoffs and another in the quarterfinals. He enters this Saturday's game at No. 3 UW-Oshkosh with 81 receptions for 958 yards and eight touchdowns, including a 54-yarder against NAIA No. 1 Morningside (Iowa) that was featured as the No. 2 play on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays in 2015.

Gumina has also been active on campus and in his hometown community during his career. He is a three-year participant in the team's Fairhaven Senior Services visitation program and the team's annual spring food drive to benefit Whitewater Food Pantry, and is a four-year member of the Pre-Health Associations Today group on campus. Gumina has also been a volunteer referee for Sussex Hamilton High School summer basketball for six years and a volunteer at West Allis Car Show and A La Carte events for six years.
