Spencer Shier makes UW-Whitewater football team

2014 Oct 22

Spencer Shier, a sophomore criminology major from Pardeeville, Wis., has made the 2014 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team.

After defeating UW-Eau Claire 52-3 on Oct. 18, UW-Whitewater extended its winning streak to 23 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in the NCAA including all divisions.

The team's head coach, Lance Leipold, also earned his 100th career victory, reaching that milestone faster than any head coach in NCAA history.

"It's something that will sink in probably further down the road," Leipold said. "I'm very fortunate for the opportunity to be the head coach at UW-Whitewater. We have players that have played hard and bought into the philosophy, and we have a great group of assistant coaches who we've been able to retain. They've done an outstanding job."

When the players are not on the field, they are giving back to the community. The UW-Whitewater football team hosts fitness programs for elementary school students, as well as participating in Reading with Warhawks, a program where players to read to elementary school children.

The Warhawks will compete in their homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. against UW-Oshkosh at Perkins Stadium.
