South Milwaukee Native John Gottwald Named Academic All-District

2014 Oct 30

John Gottwald, a senior Chemistry major and member the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team, has been selected to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 6 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday, Oct. 30.

Gottwald, a midfielder for the Warhawks, currently leads the team in goals (6), assists (11) and points (23). He leads the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in assists and ranks third in points, and his 11 assists are already the third-most in one season in program history.

A South Milwaukee High School graduate, Gottwald owns a 3.65 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Gottwald is one of just two honorees from the WIAC to be named to the team, comprised of three forwards, four midfielders, four defenders and one goalkeeper.

To be eligible for the honor, nominated student-athletes must be of sophomore academic standing, must have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's games and must carry a 3.30 cumulative GPA.

A four-year starter, Gottwald has been one of the team's most consistent players over the last four years. He was a 2013 first team All-WIAC and NSCAA All-Wisconsin State selection, and has earned WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll designation three times. Gottwald was also a key member of the 2011 Warhawks, who won the conference championship and appeared in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

UW-Whitewater is currently on a nine-match unbeaten streak heading into a crucial weekend with home matches Friday (UW-Platteville) and Sunday (UW-Oshkosh) to wrap up the regular season.

Gottwald is now eligible to be an Academic All-American. The announcement of those honorees will take place in late November.
