Solon's Fiorilli Tabbed WIAC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete at UW-Whitewater

Katie Fiorilli, a native of Solon, Ohio, graduate of Solon High School and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team, has been selected the recipient of the 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women's Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is sponsored by Badgerland Financial.

A senior, Fiorilli owns a 3.78 grade point average and is majoring in communication sciences and disorders. She was named to the 2015 NCAA Division III Academic All-America Women's At-Large Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and is a two-time Scholastic All-American by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women. Fiorilli is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and been named to UW-Whitewater's Dean's List numerous semesters.

She helped UW-Whitewater secure the WIAC Championship/National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) West Regional (presented by Culver's) for the second time in her career this season and was a member of the NCGA championship team in 2014. Fiorilli is a 10-time NCGA All-American and five-time national champion, securing the all-around title in 2014 and 2015, the vault in 2015 and 2016 and the uneven bars in 2015.

She was selected the 2015 West Region Co-Gymnast of the Year by the NACGC/W and has qualified for the NCAA Regional in the all-around on two occasions. Fiorilli received the Marc Marcotta Small College Athlete of the Year award at the Wisconsin Sports Awards for the 2015 calendar year. She is the school record holder in the vault and all-around.

Fiorilli has participated in a number of campus and community organizations and activities including: Head Start; Make A Difference Day; Kids Mud Run; Fairhaven Senior Center; and Breast Cancer Run.

Also nominated for this year's scholar-athlete award were: UW-Eau Claire's Lauren Zurowski (Sr., Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall); Gustavus Adolphus College's Alex Kopp (Sr., Wayzata, Minn./Providence Academy); Hamline University's Cate Reynolds (Sr., Liberty, Mo.); UW-La Crosse's Kari Willett (Sr., Gainesville, Va./Patriot); UW-Oshkosh's Valene Knutson (Sr., Wausau, Wis./West); and UW-Stout's Kelly Huseman (Sr., Tampa, Fla./Freedom).

The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman who served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98. Prior to this appointment, she was Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) from October 1984 - September 1996. Kruckman was the women's athletics director at UW-Eau Claire from 1974-84, and one of the original representatives to the WWIAC when it formed in 1971.

In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, she must be in her last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
