Rockford Native Chamberlain Named All-Region at UW-Whitewater

2015 May 19

Steve Chamberlain, a Accounting major and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team, was one of seven Warhawks named to All-Midwest Region teams by D3baseball.com and/or the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Freshman pitcher Lake Bachar (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) was named D3baseball.com Midwest Region Rookie of the Year and was joined by four other members on the D3baseball.com all-region teams.

Senior pitcher Colin Grove (Beloit, Wis./Memorial) and senior shortstop Mikole Pierce (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) were selected first team all-region, while senior first baseman Casey Power (Belle River, Ontario) and sophomore third baseman Steve Chamberlain (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) garnered second team accolades. Bachar was tabbed third team.

Grove and Pierce garnered ABCA/Rawlings All-Midwest Region first team accolades, while Power, Chamberlain and junior pitcher Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake) earned second team honors.

Bachar and senior catcher Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) were picked to the third team.

All seven players were named first team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and helped the Warhawks finish the 2015 season with a 35-11 record, the program's third consecutive WIAC championship and the team's eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Bachar currently ranks second in the WIAC with a 2.24 earned run average. The first team all-conference selection finished the year with a 7-1 record and one save, and held opponents to a .231 batting average in 60 1/3 innings pitched. Bachar totaled 46 strikeouts and tossed a complete-game shutout in UW-Whitewater's 3-0 victory over Washington (Mo.) in the NCAA Tournament.

Grove leads the league in ERA (2.02), wins (9-2 record), shutouts (2) and complete games (5), and ranks among WIAC leaders in strikeouts (50), innings pitched (84 2/3) and opponents' batting average (.227). He was named first team all-conference and was a two-time WIAC Pitcher of the Week during the year. Grove pitched a shutout in the Warhawks' 2-0 triumph over St. John's (Minn.) in the NCAA Tournament.

Pierce ranks among the top 10 in the conference in batting average (.379), runs batted in (48), home runs (10), total bases (115), stolen bases (18), hits (64), runs scored (45), doubles (15), triples (3), on-base percentage (.484) and slugging percentage (.680). He also led the WIAC with 32 walks. Pierce was selected first team all-league for the second straight year and is now a two-time first team all-region pick. He garnered second team accolades in 2013.

Power hit .360 in 2015 and ranks near the top of the conference in hits (63), RBIs (42), walks (23) and on-base percentage (.454). Now a two-time All-WIAC and All-Central Region honoree, Power was one of two players on the team to start all 46 games (Pierce is the other) and committed just one error for a .997 fielding percentage on the season.

Chamberlain led the team and is currently fourth in the WIAC with a .389 batting average. He also ranks sixth in the league with a .458 on-base percentage. Chamberlain was tabbed first team all-conference and had a team-high 21-game hitting streak during the season. He reached base in 27 of his last 28 games.

Morgan, now a two-time second team pick by the ABCA, finished 8-0 with a 5.01 earned run average and 38 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings pitched.

Mierow, a second team ABCA honoree a season ago, developed a reputation as one of the finest defensive catchers in the nation. He threw out 13-of-29 base runners trying to steal and posted a .988 fielding percentage. At the plate, Mierow hit .280 with 33 RBIs. Bachar completed his standout rookie season with a 7-1 record, a 2.24 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings pitched.
