Richard Petarius III makes UW-Whitewater Symphony Orchestra

2017 Jan 23

Richard Petarius III from Watertown, Wis., who is studying music, has earned a spot in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Symphony Orchestra.

To receive a spot in the orchestra, students go through an audition process where they use excerpts from the coming semester's repertoire. This ensemble runs all year, however, students have to re-audition each semester. Spots in the ensemble are available to students of any major, and many students also participate in the campus's Chamber Orchestra.

"These ensembles both focus on skills and team building - how to listen to others, and learning when you are playing a supporting role vs. when to be a leader," said Christopher Ramaekers, assistant professor of music.

Students will also learn about music history and theory and how those skills relate to the pieces that are played. The Chamber Orchestra performs a regular season concert each year where members perform masterworks from the standard orchestral repertoire as well as contemporary modern pieces.

The next performance date for the orchestra is Friday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Light Recital Hall in the Greenhill Center of the Arts: tickets.uww.edu.
