Rebecca Carvalho makes UW-Whitewater 2013-14 Vocal Jazz Ensemble

Rebecca Carvalho, a sophomore music major from Greendale, Wis., has been selected as a member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 2013-14 Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

Open to all majors, the group performs music from the jazz genre with a full band but relies heavily on vocal performance. A two-day audition process takes place at the beginning of fall semester to assess skills in reading music, ear training and solo performance.

"The students get to take a lot of ownership in regard to what they perform," said Sharri VanAlstine, director. "The group of students this year have a great sound, blending very well together to grow and improve the program."

The ensemble takes the jazz genre and projects it into an art form with intricate vocal performances, said VanAlstine.

The UW-Whitewater Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform a concert with the Chamber Singers at the Light Recital Hall in the Greenhill Center of the Arts on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m.
