2015 Dec 11

Rachael Teklics, a senior special education major from Trevor,Wis., has won a scholarship to teach abroad in Jamaica for the spring 2016 semester.

"Education majors at UW-Whitewater have the opportunity to complete part of their student-teaching requirements in another country," said Katy Heyning, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. "This is a valuable opportunity for students to learn about the culture and educational systems of another country and gain competence working with learners from diverse backgrounds."

Scholarship recipients will be student teaching in Ecuador, Jamaica or Sweden.

- The students teaching abroad in Ecuador will be a part of an eight-week program with the Centros de Estudios Interamericanos (CEDEI) and will teach at a bilingual CEDEI primary school.

- The students teaching abroad in Jamaica will be living in a rural community during a four-week program in January.

- The students teaching in Sweden will participate in a five-week program where they teach at a school in Umea while being housed at Umea University.

"Students receiving scholarships must be in good standing, have been accepted into their program and complete successful placements stateside in addition to their international experience," said Heyning.
