Pleasant Prairie Native Megan Humphreys Selected WIAC Player of the Year

2014 Oct 31

Megan Humphreys, a sophomore general business major and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team, has been tabbed Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, the league announced Friday, Oct. 31.

A Kenosha Tremper High School grad, Humphreys is the third Warhawk to earn the honor in the four years of the award's existence. Kalla Schaefer (2011-12) and Sydney Divelbiss (2012-13) are the other UW-Whitewater winners.

Despite missing last week's WIAC Championship due to injury, Humphreys enjoyed one of the best fall seasons in the program's history. She finished 19-3 overall, including a 4-0 mark against WIAC competition, and finished as the runner-up at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships earlier this month.

After winning the singles draw at the USTA/ITA Midwest Region Championship on Sept. 20-21, Humphreys earned All-America status for the second consecutive season and advanced to the national tournament. She knocked off second-seeded Sofia Vega of Texas Lutheran in the quarterfinals before advancing to the Division III final with a second straight three-set triumph, this time over Vassar's Kate Christensen.

Humphreys was outlasted in another three-set contest in the final, falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 against Ashnaa Rao of Johns Hopkins (Md.).

Following play, Humphreys was named winner of the women's James O'Hara Sargent Sportsmanship Award, presented by Rolex Watch, USA. The award recognizes players who display outstanding sportsmanship and exemplify the spirit of college tennis during play. Players must reach the finals of their divisional draw to be eligible for the accolade.

A three-time WIAC Player of the Week in singles, Humphreys also registered a strong doubles performance during the fall season, finishing 11-3 (3-1 WIAC) playing with sophomore Amy Upthagrove and freshman Jillian Wallace.

Humphreys and Upthagrove finished as the runner-up in the doubles draw at the USTA/ITA Midwest Region Championship to freshmen teammates Alicia Beck and Bridgid McGuire, who went on to place eighth at ITA nationals.

The Warhawks won their eighth consecutive conference championship over the weekend and finished the fall season 9-0 overall and 6-0 in WIAC play.

UW-Whitewater continues the season March 7 against Edgewood and Luther (Iowa) at Premier Tennis & Fitness in Janesville.
