Perkin II, a Greenfield native, helps UW-Whitewater to fourth in NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships

2015 Mar 16

Seven Warhawks qualified and competed in the 2015 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships including Greenfield native Elroy Perkin II to help the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to a fourth place finish. Five Warhawks earned All-America recognition for finishing in the top eight in their weight class.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team finished fourth in the 2015 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted by Elizabethtown College at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. The Warhawks tallied five All-Americans with a total of seven qualifiers including a national runner-up.

In the final bout for UW-Whitewater of the championships, junior Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel) battled for the national title at 197 pounds.

Siefert bolstered the Warhawks fourth place finish as the national runner-up. Siefert lost a heart breaker in sudden victory overtime, 6-4, to SUNY-Cortland's Joe Giaramita. A near takedown for Siefert in the first period was video reviewed but denied closing the first three minutes with no score. Giaramita chose the bottom position to start the second period. Siefert held him to the ground and eventually to his back for a two-point nearfall. Giaramita registered the escape but after Siefert accumulated 43 seconds of riding time to head into the third with Siefert leading 2-1. With Siefert on the bottom at the start of the third, Giaramita let Siefert up to record the escape. A stalling call awarded Giaramita a point followed by a takedown. Siefert got out of the hold a few seconds later to knot the score 4-4 and force sudden victory overtime. A scramble had both wrestlers vying for position but it was Giarmarita who was awarded the points for the takedown and 6-4 win.

The four additional Warhawks to earn All-America recognition were fifth place finisher Elroy Perkin(Greenfield/Whitnall) (149), seventh place finishers Matt Adcock (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park)(141) and Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon) (285) and eighth place finisher Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) (174). Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East) (133) and Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) (157) also competed in the championships.

Seniors Pruett, Perkin, Edgren competing in the championships this weekend combined for a four-year dual meet record of 70-15. The three combined for 275 wins over the course of their careers.

UW-Whitewater's team total of 60.5 and fourth place team finish is third best in program history, all in the last three seasons. Augsburg won the national title followed by Wartburg and Wabash.

In his first season at the helm of the Warhawk wrestling program, head coach Ned Shuck led UW-Whitewater to its fourth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship, its third consecutive NCAA Regional title and to third in the NCAA Division III Championships. He coached seven NCAA Championship qualifiers, five All-Americans, two regional champions, four regional runners-up and five conference champions.
