Pana's Stringer Tabbed National Athlete of the Week for UW-Whitewater Track and Field

2017 Apr 25

Genevieve Stringer, a native of Pana, Ill., graduate of Central A and M High School and senior at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was selected as the Division III National Field Athlete of the Week by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association after a record-setting performance in the discus throw at the Augustana (Ill.) Meet of Champions on Friday.

Stringer posted a toss of 169-00 (51.51 meters), good for the ninth-best throw in Division III history and a UW-Whitewater school record, to finish atop the 32-athlete field in the discus.

Stringer shattered the program's previous top mark of 165-07 (50.47 meters), which was set by Shelby Mahr in 2015. She also improved on her nation-leading top result, which is now more than 10 feet further than the next best.

A two-year captain, Stringer is a two-time discus All-American, placing fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in both 2014 and 2016.

Stringer and the Warhawk women continue action this Saturday at the UW-Whitewater Drake Alternative Meet at 11 am. Select members of the team's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays will travel to the Drake Relays, which begin Friday at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Stringer is majoring in social work at UW-Whitewater.
