2015 Aug 31

Brianna Reid, a native of Oak Creek, WI, and graduate of Oak Creek High School, has been selected to compete for the 2015 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team.

Reid, a junior for the Warhawks, is majoring in communicative sciences and disorders.

UW-Whitewater opens the season Tuesday at fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan, a 2014 NCAA Division III national semifinalist.

UW-Whitewater Women's Soccer Preview: Warhawks Look to "Embrace the We"

A year after the best season in school history, Head Coach Ryan Quamme and his squad, ranked 20th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll, and loaded with 19 freshmen, 8 sophomores, 5 juniors and 2 seniors, will return to the field to prove they can do it again.

Last season the Warhawks chalked up 18 wins (at one point winning 15 in a row), their fifth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title and their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division III tournament. On top of that, they extended their regular season WIAC win streak to 29 games. Not a bad 2014.

With expectations high for 2015, Quamme has to find a way to take his returning, potent offensive attack and mesh it with some new players in some key defensive positions.

Back for her senior season is team captain Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls). The four-year starter for the Warhawks is four assists shy of the career record.

"Jenna is an outstanding student-athlete who excels on and off the field as shown by the number of accolades she has earned in her first three years as a Warhawk," Quamme said. "Jenna is a tremendous role model for all of her current teammates, especially the newcomers."

Quamme expects that Woodson, along with Carina Krausert (Delafield, Wis./Catholic Memorial),Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek), will share captain responsibilities this season.

Krausert, Pottle and Reid are a major part of the Warhawks' offense, which returns 92 percent of its output from a year ago. In 2014, the trio combined for 25 of the Warhawks' 49 goals, including nine game-winners. For their efforts, Reid and Pottle were named first team all-conference, with Reid adding Offensive Player of the Year honors. Reid, a junior, already cracked the top 10 in career goals after just two seasons. "Brianna has grown, and continues to grow, as a soccer player, and has worked hard over the past year improving her technical abilities to compliment her physical strengths," Quamme said.

One hole the Warhawks will need to fill is at the goalkeeper position. Jordan Myers (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) left some big shoes to fill. In four seasons as the Warhawks' starter, Myers totaled 346 saves (second in the school record book), tallied a school record 31 shutouts and saved 81.4 percent of the shots on goal. She totaled 61 career wins as goalkeeper.

"Jordan had a great career and was a key to our success the last four years," Quamme said. "It's difficult to replace a four year starter in any position, but especially in goal."

Quamme believes that Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) is up to the task.

"Erin played club at a high level for the Windy City Pride," Quamme said. "I believe her past club experience in competitive situations will help her adjustment to the collegiate game."

Doody will compete with fellow freshmen Elly Diderrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) for playing time at the position.

Another player the Warhawks will need to replace is center midfielder Sarah Sedlar (Racine, Wis./Racine Case), a four-year starter and, according to Quamme, "an unbelievable physical presence on the field for us." Quamme doesn't expect one player to step in and replace Sedlar, but anticipates a combination multiple returners and newcomers filling the role.

The group of 34 players and three coaches will find out how well the new meshes with the "old" very quickly this season.

The Warhawks start 2015 with three games against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season. Their first game is against 2014 NCAA semifinalist and fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. The Warhawks topped the Titans 1-0 last season in Whitewater and will travel to Bloomington, Ill., for their opener on Sept. 1. Four days later, the Warhawks will head to Duluth, Minn., to play in the Advantage Emblem Cup. There they will take on Concordia-Moorhead and St. Scholastica.

After that they'll return to Whitewater for their home opener against the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sept. 9. UW-Whitewater will look to extend its 29-game WIAC regular season win streak with its conference opener on Sept. 26 at UW-Stevens Point. The Warhawks have won six in a row over the Pointers.

Quamme has guided the team to 16, 17 and 18 wins, respectively, in his first three seasons at the helm. For his efforts, he has earned WIAC Coach of the Year honors each season. For a coach that's won over 80 percent of his games in his first three seasons, he is quick to point out he doesn't do it alone.

"We have an outstanding coaching staff with assistants Matt Uhlmann and Ralph Tooren, who have all worked together for many years" Quamme said.

Quamme makes sure his players embrace the same idea. This season, the Warhawks will take the field with the mentality to "erase the 'me'" and "embrace the 'we'".
