Milton Native Stair to Compete for UW-Whitewater Women's Golf in 2016

2016 Sep 1

Stephanie Stair, a native of Milton, WI, and graduate of Milton High School, will play for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's golf team during the 2016-17 season.

Stair, a senior at UW-Whitewater, is majoring in social work.

UW-Whitewater begins its season this Friday at the Tournament on the Border with all five of last season's starters and a new face at the helm of the program.

The Warhawks enter the new campaign under the leadership of head coach Andrea Wieland, who was hired in early August after serving for 12 years as head coach of the Milton High School girls' golf program.

Wieland, a former Division I golfer at the University of Wisconsin, returns a deep, experienced lineup from last season, led by seniors Kayla Asleson, Stephanie Stair and Hannah Taylor.

Stair, a second team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection, led the team with an 18-hole scoring average of 86.4 last fall. She matched the team's best individual finish with a tie for eighth place to help UW-Whitewater place third at the WIAC Championship.

Asleson finished last year's spring season with an average of 85.8, shaving nearly three strokes off of her fall mark. She carded her top score of the season, a 79, in the final round of the UW-Whitewater Spring Fling.

Taylor, who also competes for the Warhawk softball team, average and 88.7 last fall. She recorded two of her best three rounds of the season at last year's Tournament on the Border, which will be played at Bristol Oaks Country Club again this weekend.

Other returning starters include sophomores Kaitlin Bowe and Rebekah Donner.

Donner matched Stair with a tie for eighth place at the WIAC Championships and led the team during the spring with an average of 84. Bowe averaged an 88.4 in the fall and improved to an 87 in the spring.

Hayley Jefferson enters the season as the lone junior. She averaged an 88.4 during the spring season.

Breanna Bertschinger, Maddie McCue and Sabrina Schreck join Bowe and Donner in the sophomore class.

After joining the team for the spring season as a transfer, McCue averaged an 87.5 and finished among the team's top three in three of her four tournaments. Bertschinger and Schreck each tallied three straight rounds under 90 to cap the spring season.

The Warhawks will welcome freshmen Bella Barbiere, Kristin Bowe, Ashley Hofmeister, Gracie Holler, Avery Plautz and Kelly Storti to the mix.

After this weekend's opening tournament, UW-Whitewater visits Prairie Links in Waverly, Iowa, for the Wartburg Invite on Sept. 10-11, then heads to St. Andrew's Golf & Country Club in West Chicago for the Benedictine Fall Invite.

The Warhawks will host the annual UW-Whitewater Fall Classic on Sept. 23-24 at Delbrook Golf Course in Delavan.

UW-Whitewater's final tune-up prior to the conference meet is the UW-Stevens Point Invite on Oct. 1-2 at Glacier Wood in Iola.

The three-round WIAC Championship is slated for Oct. 7-9 at Reedsburg Country Club in Reedsburg. The winner of the seven-team tournament earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship, which takes place from May 9-12 at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.
