Milliam Lor Named McNair Scholar at UW-Whitewater

2012 Nov 13

Milliam Lor, a junior international studies major from Milwaukee, Wis., has been selected as a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater McNair Scholars.

The McNair Scholars Program prepares first-generation and multicultural students for graduate studies and eventual careers as university faculty. Students are assigned a faculty mentor within their major to enhance research, computer, test-taking and critical thinking skills.

Each student must submit appropriate paperwork, go through an interview process with a McNair staff member, and be approved by the McNair Advisory Committee.

"This is one of the most elite programs on campus, where we offer vast support to students to prepare them for graduate studies," said Samantha Samreth, academic network director. "From personal statements to professional support, our scholars will always be in the McNair family."

After being selected, each McNair Scholar spends eight weeks at UW-Whitewater during the summer working on undergraduate research. They present their findings at prestigious events, specifically the National Conference on Undergraduate Research and UW-Whitewater Undergraduate Research Day. The following summer, McNair Scholars participate in external research internships at a different university for six to ten weeks.
