Michaela Matthys, a Wonder Lake native, has been named WIAC Athlete of the Week

Four University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student-athletes, including Wonder Lake native Michaela Matthys, have earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors for the week of February 1-8.

Gymnastics (Specialist) - Lewa Evans - Freshman - Vault, Balance Beam, Floor Exercise

Evans tied for her season-high on the vault to lead the Warhawks to a 189-025-178.950 win over Gustavus Adolphus last Saturday. The freshman's vault scored a 9.55 to win the event. She added a 9.45 on the balance beam to finish fourth in her first time entering the competition rotation this season. Evans' floor routine scored 9.425 to finish fifth in the event and help UW-Whitewater to an event total of at least 47.700 for the fourth consecutive meet.

Women's Swimming - Michaela Matthys - Freshman

Matthys broke the school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.72 to win the event and lead the Warhawks to their first dual meet win over UW-La Crosse, 145.50-97.50, in program history. Matthys added first place points in the 100-yard butterfly, an event she also holds the school record in, with a time of 57.00. The freshman joined her teammates to take top honors int he 200-yard medley relay. The foursome, with Matthys swimming the third leg, was clocked in 1:47.86 to win the event.

Women's Diving - Sierra Becker - Junior

Becker won both the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions and broke a program record to lead the Warhawks to their first win over UW-La Crosse in program history, 145.50-97.50. Becker's 268.95 total of the three-meter board is the best in school history and she posted a season-best 274.26 off the one-meter board to sweep the dives.

Wrestling - Isaiah Vela - Freshman - 149 pounds

Vela finished with a 4-0 record to win the 149-pound weight class Saturday at UW-Eau Claire's Don Parker Open. Along the way, he recorded two pins and defeated 2014 national qualifier Will Keeter of Augsburg, the NO. 10 wrestler at 149 according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, in the semifinals. Vela capped the title with a 9-5 decision over UW-La Crosse's Aaron Sweeney.
