2015 Mar 4

Six members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's swimming and diving program have been selected to compete in the 2015 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Shenandoah, Texas March 18-21 including Wonder Lake native Michaela Matthys.

Senior Amy Spaay, the 2013 national champion in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, will look to add two more titles to her resume. The meet record holder enters the meets with the top time in Division III this season, 1:01.93, in the 100. Her 2:19.35 in the 200 ranks eleventh in the nation this season.

Freshman Michaela Matthys qualified in two individual events in her first year of collegiate competition. She holds the tenth-best mark this season in the 100-yard butterfly, 55.64. Matthys will also swim the 200-yard butterfly heading into the championship with a seed time of 2:04.19, fifteenth in DIII. Both of her seed times were set at the WIAC Championships and both are UW-Whitewater program records.

Senior Kelsey Kohlbeck will join Spaay and Matthys in the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. Fellow senior Kayla Martin will be the fourth Warhawk in the 200. UW-Whitewater's foursome set the program record of 1:44.32 at the WIAC Championships to qualify for the national championships.

In the 400, freshman Stephanie Haebig will join Kohlbeck, Matthys and Spaay. The group broke the UW-Whitewater record with a time of 3:49.40 at the conference championships to set their qualifying mark.

Junior Sierra Becker qualified in the diving well. Becker set the UW-Whitewater records off the one and three-meter boards to finish fourth and seventh respectively at a NCAA Diving Regional hosted by the University of Chicago Feb. 27-28. Her 492.40 in eleven dives Friday was fourth-best in the regional and paved the way to her qualification into nationals. Becker posted an eleven-dive total of 460.65 for seventh off the three-meter board Saturday. Becker has competed in the dives at the last two NCAA Championships earning honorable mention All-America honors on both occasions.
