Melanie Sorman presents at spring Undergraduate Research Day

2015 Mar 31

More than 250 students who spent the past academic year exploring various research topics presented their findings on March 18 at Undergraduate Research Day at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Melanie Sorman, a sophomore geography major from Hoffman Estates, Ill., presented a project titled "Comparison of Carboniferous and Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) Geochemistry and Relation to Paleoecology."

This year's exhibit represented the largest number of students involved in undergraduate research in UW-Whitewater history.

"We have a record number of students participating," said Catherine Chan, director of the program. "Every year it grows. Each year, we hear what a positive experience it is for both students and mentors."

More than two-thirds of the departments on campus, from all four colleges, were represented in the research projects.

Students submit proposals, which an internal panel reviews to determine whether the project is worthy of funding and mentoring. The researchers spend the following academic year perfecting the project for this important day.
