Makenzie Smith performs in "Nate the Dragon" at UW-Whitewater
2014 Oct 21
"Nate the Dragon," a touching anti-bullying story that features puppets, songs, dragons and friendship, comes to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in a world-premiere production.
Makenzie Smith, a sophomore theater major from Madison, Wis., appears as Shelly.
"Nate the Dragon" creates a platform to address bullying at a young age, while also providing a lighthearted comedy for children to enjoy. All of the characters are animals, but Nate the Dragon is picked on for not being like the others.
The play originated as a book, based on real experiences, written by UW-Whitewater alumna Kim Groshek '91 and her nephew Alex Urner.
Neil Haven '05, a UW-Whitewater alumnus, wrote the play. Adam Triebold, a UW-Whitewater senior, provided the music for the production.
"This production has been in the works for a long time and we are very proud to finally show it to the world," said Charles Grover, director and professor of theatre and dance at UW-Whitewater. "By addressing bullying and similar problems with society, we are taking a story made for children and educating individuals of all ages and backgrounds on this topic."
The production opens Saturday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m. at Barnett Theatre in the Greenhill Center of the Arts.
