Makenzie Smith appears in Suds, the Musical at UW-Whitewater

2015 Jul 7

Suds, the Musical, a rocking '60s musical soap opera set in a local laundromat, comes to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as part of the Summeround series.

Makenzie Smith, a senior theatre major from Monroe, Wis., appears as Cindy.

The play follows Cindy, a worker in a laundromat who starts her birthday bubbly -- but the mailman delivers bad news instead of birthday cards. Feeling suicidal, she's visited by a host of guardian angels with a perfect song for every emotion. Everything's whiter and brighter after her angels dream up the ultimate birthday celebration.

"The music in Suds is reminiscent of popular 1960s songs, so it will feel familiar to audience members who were listening to pop at during that time," said director Charles "Skip" Grover, professor of theatre and dance. "Younger audience members will enjoy the lively beat and spirited energy of the songs too."

The production opens Tuesday, July 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Hicklin Studio Theatre in the Greenhill Center of the Arts and runs nightly through Saturday, June 18. A final matinee will be performed Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m.
