Lydia Sprain wins national championship

2014 Mar 20

Lydia Sprain and her University of Wisconsin-Whitewater teammates are at the top of the collegiate wheelchair basketball world.

Sprain, a senior public policy and administration major from Mineral Point, Wis., helped the Warhawks bring home the title for the third consecutive year after defeating Alabama 69-54 on March 8 at the National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Arlington.

The team, which has existed for five years, also experienced an undefeated regular season.

"Success does not just happen," said Dan Price, head coach. "You have to work at it and set long-term and short-term goals."

Along with the new players, the women's team boasted a starting line up that featured four Paralympians.

"The players hold themselves accountable for every action, on and off the court," Price said. "This discipline has now translated to a national championship."
