Laprece Armour presents at fall Undergraduate Research Day

2014 Sep 24

From languages and literatures to social sciences, students will present their research findings on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Undergraduate Research Day at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Laprece Armour, a senior psychology major from Whitewater, Wis., will present a project titled "Are African American College Students’ Awareness of Alternative Histories related to their Identities?."

The event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hamilton Room of the James R. Connor University Center.

"This is a great day to celebrate research and scholarly activities on the UW-Whitewater campus," said Catherine Chan, director of the undergraduate research program. "By helping provide resources and mentorship, UW-Whitewater is able to allow students to apply their efforts to something they care about."

Much of this research is funded through the Undergraduate Research Office. The McNair Scholars Program, which prepares students for graduate studies and eventual careers as university professors, provides resources for research as well.

Students submit proposals, which are reviewed by an internal panel to determine whether the project qualifies for funding and mentoring. The students spend the summer conducting research that will carry on throughout the academic year.

Chan said students find the experience extremely rewarding and she encourages students of all majors to consider giving research a try.

"The opportunities for self exploration pave the way for a positive college experience," she said.
