Lance Schroeder to stage "Street Scene" at UW-Whitewater

2018 Feb 23

Lance Schroeder from Mauston, Wis., who is majoring in theater, is helping to stage the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater production of "Street Scene."

The opera, which takes place in the 1930s outside a steamy New York City tenement building, explores jealousy, infatuation, lust, and love set to a jazz-inspired score that reflects a multi-ethnic population. The show is directed by faculty member Kymberly Mellen and conducted by Robert Gehrenbeck

Schroeder performs as Vincent Jones.

"Composer Kurt Weill, a German immigrant himself was in love with America and the freedom it represented. He considered Street Scene the first true 'American opera,' combining the best elements of 1930s musical theatre song and dance, with passionate arias, and swelling large group numbers," said Mellen. "It was his melodic love song to the artistic and musical freedoms he could now explore. It's a melting pot of musical styles. You'll swear you are listening to Sondheim, then Gershwin, then Puccini, then Wagner - but it's all composer, Kurt Weill and lyricist, Langston Hughes."

The four performances at Barnett Theatre are February 25 and March 3 at 2 p.m.; and February 27 and March 1 at 7:30 p.m.
