Lakeland Native Elmer Named Scholar All-American

2015 Apr 9

Mitchell Elmer, a computer science major and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team, was one of six Warhawks who garnered Scholar All-America accolades from the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the organization announced last month.

Seniors Ryan Aprahamian, Trevor Pruett, juniors Mitchell Elmer, Tom Gerszewski, Corey Meyer and freshman Connor Price each qualified for the recognition by virtue of their performance on the mat and in the classroom.

Aprahamian, Pruett and Meyer were also honorees in 2013-14.

All six wrestlers helped the Warhawks finish fourth at the NCAA Division III Championship. UW-Whitewater claimed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III Midwest Region championships. The team also placed first at the Messiah Petrofes (Dec. 5-6) and Pete Willson-Wheaton (Jan. 30-31) Invitationals and finished 15-1 in dual matches.

Aprahamian finished his four-year career with a memorable 2014-15 campaign. He finished 26-7 at 184 pounds, earning a WIAC individual title and placing fifth at the Midwest Region championships. Aprahamian also finished third at Messiah and fifth at Wheaton.

Gerszewski and Pruett each qualified for the NCAA Championship competing at 157 and 133 pounds, respectively. Gerszewski finished 33-9, was the WIAC champion at 157 and placed second at regionals. Pruett earned third place at the WIAC meet, was the NCAA Midwest Region champion and finished with a 25-12 mark.

Meyer placed fifth in the WIAC at 157 pounds and tallied a 14-5 record, while Elmer finished the season with a 13-7 mark.

Price, a 165-pounder, finished 18-10 after placing second in the conference and sixth in the region.
