Katherine Skora wins club volleyball national title

2015 Jun 4

Katherine Skora, a freshman undeclared major from Salem, Wis., has won a national title with the UW-Whitewater women's club volleyball team.

The National Collegiate Club Volleyball championships -- held April 11 in Kansas City, Missouri -- included five women's divisions. UW-Whitewater placed in the Women's D 1AAA division, with close to 200 teams competing for a national title.

After strong pool play, the UW-Whitewater women found themselves facing Winona State University in the final match. The players had previously lost to WSU in multiple tournaments during conference play, including tournament championship matches. This time around, UW-Whitewater defeated Winona WSU with ease in two games to win the national championship.

"This win is awesome. UW-Whitewater is known as an athletic campus mainly for varsity athletics, but it's nice to see a club sport do so well and winning trophies," said James Friel, assistant director of recreation sports and facilities. "Club sports are an outlet to play the sports our love. It still has the competitive edge. It's a learning laboratory. You get an outside-of-the-box experience that helps you develop skills for future careers."
