Justin Steger makes UW-Whitewater 2013-14 Symphonic Wind Ensemble

2013 Nov 7

Justin Steger, a sophomore music major from New Berlin, Wis., has been selected as a member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater 2013-14 Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

"For any ensemble, the experience during college is invaluable," said Glenn Hayes, a professor of music and adviser to the ensemble. "All of our musicians love the environment and what they're doing, so it makes for a positive, productive experience."

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the premier concert band on campus, made up of musicians specializing in woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments. After a two-day audition process at the beginning of the fall semester, players are chosen and practice begins.

"I always want students to experience music at the deepest levels," said Hayes. "The students in the ensemble are remarkable individuals, surprising me daily with their talent and motivation to succeed."

Last February, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, one of the most renowned performance sites in the world, as part of the New York Wind Band Festival. The ensemble is set to perform at the Chicago International Ensemble Festival on April 8, 2014.
