Jordan Newman, a Minneapolis native, has been named WIAC Athlete of the Week

Minneapolis native Jordan Newman is one of three University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student-athletes to be recognized as Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for the week of January 26-February 1.

Men's Basketball - Quardell Young - Senior - Guard Young's clutch play in the closing moments helped the top-ranked Warhawks win a pair of one-point games last week. On Wednesday at UW-Platteville, Young put UW-Whitewater ahead by one with a driving lay-up with eight seconds to play, then blocked the game-winning shot attempt ont he other end, allowing the Warhawks to hang on for a 65-64 victory. Three days later, in a nearly identical scenario, Young drove right and converted a lay-up with nine seconds left against UW-La Crosse to put UW-Whitewater up by one. For the second straight game, he blocked the game-winning attempt on defense to help the Warhawks preserve a 68-67 triumph at Kachel Gymnasium. For the week, Young averaged 23.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game while shooting 62.1 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point range and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Women's Swimming - Michaela Matthys - Freshman - Butterfly/Relays Matthys set the school record in the 200-yard butterfly, the first time she swam the event this season, leading the Warhawks to a 150-112 win over UW-Eau Claire Saturday. She posted a time of 2:11.52 to win the 200 and her 58.75 was the fastest time registered in the 100-yard butterfly. Matthys led-off the Warhawks' 400-yard freestyle relay that recorded the top time Saturday, 3:42.89 and added a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:50.57.

Wrestling - Jordan Newman - 174 pounds Newman won the 174-pound flight to help the No. 2 Warhawks repeat as champions of the Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Wheaton, Ill. After recording two pins and a major decision to reach the semifinals, Newman knocked off a pair of nationally-ranked opponents en route to the title. In the semifinals, he knocked off No. 3 Josh Thomson of Messiah, the bracket's top seed, by a 14-12 decision. In the championship match, Newman outlasted Alma's Jamie Jakes, ranked fifth by D3wrestle.com, seventh by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and seeded second in the tournament, in a 9-4 decision. Newman, currently ranked ninth by the NWCA, finished 5-0 for the weekend.
