Jessica Kolton awarded study abroad scholarship from UW-Whitewater

2017 May 17

Jessica Kolton from Waukesha, Wis., who is studying elementary education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has received a scholarship to complete a semester teaching abroad.

"Education majors at UW-Whitewater have the opportunity to complete part of their student-teaching requirements in another country," said Katy Heyning, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. "This is a valuable opportunity for students to learn about the culture and educational systems of another country and gain competence working with learners from diverse backgrounds."

The students teaching abroad in Ecuador will be a part of an eight-week program with the Centros de Estudios Interamericanos and will teach at one of two bilingual CEDEI schools.

Students who complete international student teaching in Jamaica spend three to four weeks teaching in a rural Jamaican school. In their student teaching placement, they assume responsibilities for assessing, planning, and educating the students in their classroom.

Kolton will study abroad in Jamaica during the Fall of 2017.
