The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's track and field team enters the 2016 indoor season with hopes of competing for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and maintaining its high national standing behind a deep, talented group of returners and a talented recruiting class.

Despite the loss of Lexie Sondgeroth and Shelby Mahr, two of the most decorated student-athletes in school history who combined for 23 All-America honors, the Warhawks, who host the Karl Schlender Invitational this Saturday at Kachel Fieldhouse, look to continue to build on a pair of top 25 national finishes a season ago.

UW-Whitewater placed sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships and tied for 22nd at the national outdoor meet. Senior Candice Wayne (West Bend, Wis./West) and junior Genny Rose Stringer (Assumption, Ill./Assumption) return as national qualifiers during the 2015 outdoor season.

Stringer is joined by senior Sarah Kasiurak (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett), juniors Ariel Altergott (Genoa City, Wis./Badger) and Liberty Wieseman (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) as captains of the 2016 team.

After beginning the season this Saturday, the Warhawks travel to North Central (Ill.) on Jan. 22 before returning home Jan. 30 for the Warhawk Classic Invitational.

The WIAC Indoor Championships are scheduled for Feb. 26-27 at UW-Oshkosh, and are followed by the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships on March 11-12 at Grinnell (Iowa) College.

UW-Whitewater regularly competes against the best teams in the nation. Five conference teams are ranked among the top 15 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Women's Indoor National Team Computer Rankings, including two in the top five.

See below for a group-by-group preview of the 2016 UW-Whitewater women's outdoor track and field team.
