Heather Bernhardt recognized during Nontraditional Student Week

2014 Nov 18

Heather Bernhardt, a senior communication sciences and disorders major from Watertown, Wis., was recognized as an exceptional nontraditional student by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

There are currently 875 nontraditional students seeking undergraduate degrees at UW-Whitewater. Five of these students were recognized during Nontraditional Student Week.

"It is an opportunity for our university to celebrate and draw attention to the accomplishments and contributions our nontraditional students make on our campus," said Lynn Smith, adult/nontraditional student services coordinator. "They are goal-orientated, take their learning seriously and are highly committed to their academic programs."

Students are nominated by faculty or staff members.

For recognition purposes, nontraditional students are defined as students who are 25 or older, do not come directly to college after high school, attend college part-time, are financially independent, have children or dependents other than a spouse, or are military veterans, according to Smith.
