Emily Kahl awarded Gilman International Scholarship

2014 Feb 11

Emily Kahl, a sophomore Spanish education major at UW-Whitewater from Huntley, Ill., has been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to help fund an upcoming spring 2014 study abroad program.

The Gilman International Scholarship is administered by the Institute of International Education. Rep. Benjamin Gilman, who retired in 2002 after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years, including six years chairing the House Foreign Relations Committee, inspired the scholarship.

"It is extremely beneficial for students to study abroad during their undergraduate years," said Mikaela Auerbach, global experiences coordinator at UW-Whitewater. "Integrating academic knowledge with a unique, cultural experience makes for a well-rounded, educated student, and that's what this scholarship helps achieve."

Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad costs, with the program aiming to diversify the students who study abroad and the countries and regions they visit.

"We are so proud of the three recipients this semester. It's been a pleasure working with them through their application process," said Auerbach. "As always, it's great to see hard work translate to success and make a difference in the futures of students here at UW-Whitewater."
