2017 Oct 20

Michaela Matthys, a native of Crystal Lake, IL, and graduate of McHenry West High School, will compete for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's swimming and diving team during the 2017-18 season, which begins this Saturday at the All-Wisconsin Invitational at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis.

Matthys, a senior at UW-Whitewater, is majoring in media arts and game development.

Both the men's and women's teams placed third at last year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, the fifth consecutive top three finish for both teams. Michaela Matthys (Crystal Lake, Ill./McHenry West) of the women's team qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships, where she competed in the 100-yard butterfly, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard freestyle.

Head coach Joel Rollings returns for his 12th season at the helm of both programs. He is a four-time WIAC Coach of the Year, sweeping men's and women's top coaching accolades in 2014-15, and has led the Warhawks to a combined 89 school record performances, 46 conference championships and 13 All-America honors.

Following this weekend's invitational, UW-Whitewater visits Illinois Tech on Oct. 28 for a tri-meet also including Beloit. After a dual meet at Carroll on Nov. 3, the Warhawks host UW-Oshkosh Nov. 10 for their first home and WIAC meet.

The teams continue conference action Nov. 18 at UW-Stevens Point, then heads to the A3 Carthage Classic Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Kenosha.

UW-Whitewater will take its winter training trip to Coronado, Calif., where the teams will face Willamette (Ore.) for a dual meet. The Warhawks return to home competition Jan. 20 against Lake Forest (Ill.) and Lawrence before taking on UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 27 in their final home meet of the season.

The Warhawks visit UW-La Crosse Feb. 3 and head back to Schroeder Aquatic Center Feb. 15-17 for the WIAC Championships.

The NCAA Division III Championships will be held March 21-24 at IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.

Matthys headlines the Warhawks' senior class and is the team's most decorated returner. A school record holder in five events, including one relay, Matthys is a two-time All-American and five-time WIAC champion, including three times in her signature event, the 100-yard butterfly. She is a 17-time WIAC placer and eight-time All-WIAC honoree.

Other members of the senior class include Stephanie Haebig (Grafton, Wis./Grafton, Rachel Stuberg (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) and Emily Trenn (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin). Haebig garnered All-America accolades in the 400-yard medley relay along with Matthys in 2015 and is a three-time conference placer. Stuberg placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 2015, and Trenn has been a consistent competitor in freestyle and backstroke events during the last three years.

Melanie Carlson (Waukesha, Wis./West) and Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson) highlight UW-Whitewater's junior class. A five-time WIAC placer, Carlson grabbed first place in the 200-yard butterfly at last season's conference meet and finished sixth in both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley.

Hawker has placed among the top eight in the WIAC 12 times so far in her career, with those finishes yielding six second team All-WIAC honors. She finished as runner-up in five events at last season's WIAC Championships, including the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard individual medley and three relays, and was third in the 400-yard individual medley.

Alyssa Haertl (Oshkosh, Wis./West) returns after being part of the tam's third-place 200-yard freestyle relay team. Kasey Mrkvicka (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) is the oldest member of the team's diving contingent.

Returning sophomores include Madeline Carroll (Downers Grove, Ill./North), Meredith Gustafson (Brookfield, Wis./East), Allie Hoffman (Inner Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan), Erin Locante (Brookfield, Wis./Central), Quincey Newton (Oregon, Wis./Oregon), Alexis Olson (Marengo, Ill./Marengo), Shayna Putney (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower), Cali Rummelhart (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper), Renata Schlomann (New Berlin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels), Bailey Weston (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and Anna Wolf (Blanchardville, Wis./New Glarus).
