Brendon Mendoza presented at spring Undergraduate Research Day

2014 Mar 24

More than 200 students, who spent the academic year exploring research topics from music education to natural sciences, presented their findings March 19 at Undergraduate Research Day at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Brendon Mendoza, a junior general business major from Racine, Wis., presented a project titled "A Longitudinal Study Of Hispanic Segregation: Delavan, Wisconsin 2001-2011."

"This is a great day to celebrate the research and scholarly activities on the UW-Whitewater campus," said Catherine Chan, director of the Undergraduate Research Program.

From informative posters and scientific demonstrations, to presentations of art and theater, Undergraduate Research Day showcases a broad range of projects.

Much of this research is funded through the Undergraduate Research Office, which provides resources to fund and complete a project. The McNair Scholars, a program that prepares students for graduate studies and eventual careers as university professors, provides resources for research as well.

Many of the students received thousands of dollars in grants to conduct their projects.

Students submit proposals, which are reviewed by an internal panel to determine whether the project is worth funding and mentoring. Researchers spend the following academic year perfecting the project for this very important day.

"Undergraduate research has now become a high priority for UW-Whitewater and the surrounding community," Chan said. "Students often say this is the highlight of their college experience."
