Brandon Lopez Graduates from UW-Whitewater U-Lead Training Program

2012 Oct 9

Brandon Lopez, a first-year student from Madison, Wis., participated and graduated from U-Lead, a program offered to incoming students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

U-Lead's mission is to increase retention of students at UW-Whitewater and help them get a jump-start in campus involvement. This three-day program offers students diversity training, involvement opportunities and a chance to find a group of friends before the academic year begins. Eighty-three people participated.

"It helps people get out there and be socially successful," said Ron Buchholz, director of Career and Leadership Development. "U-Lead provides a really smooth transition between high school and college. It helps students succeed in many different ways."

U-Lead also offers students training with subjects like self-identity, culture and leadership. In fact, many student participants have gravitated towards leadership roles on campus.

"A couple of parents have said that their kids were afraid of not making any new friends and that U-Lead changed that forever," said Buchholz. "Students that become friends are not always around each other, but they still get together and are friends all through college."
