Brandon Haut in "Romeo and Juliet" at UW-Whitewater

2014 Apr 25

"Romeo and Juliet," the story of everlasting love and devastating tragedy, comes to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in a modern, steam punk production.

Brandon Haut, a junior theatre major from New Berlin, WI, appears as Friar Laurence.

Written by William Shakespeare, the play tells the tale of two teenagers in Verona that meet and fall in love. Their families oppose the relationship, causing drama and death throughout the story.

"We're taking this relatively popular story and challenging the public's perception of it," said Brittany Meister, lead actress. "The aesthetics are beautiful and modern, with an overall theme of steam punk to take this tale and present it in a different light."

From costumes to stage sets, the production took three months to prepare.

"Planning a production is an intricate process, but we're a close-knit group," said Cory Hagen, lead actor. "The actors and actresses involved are all very supportive of each other; we're one big family at the end of the day."

"Romeo and Juliet" opens Tuesday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Barnett Theatre in the Greenhill Center of the Arts, and runs until Saturday, May 3.
