Blaine's Newman Earns Spot on 2017-18 UW-Whitewater Wrestling Roster

Jordan Newman, a native of Blaine, MN, and graduate of St. John's Military Academy, will compete for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team during the 2017-18 season, which begins Tuesday with a dual meet against UW-Oshkosh.

Newman, a Senior at UW-Whitewater, is majoring in Physical Education.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team is poised to compete for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and a high placement at the NCAA Division III Championships as it kicks off the 2017-18 season this Tuesday.

Last season, the Warhawks claimed three individual titles en route to a runner-up finish at the WIAC Championships. The team then qualified four for the NCAA Championships with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional, and Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) became the program's first individual national champion since 1991 with a 4-0 record at 184 pounds. Zac Denny(Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem), who graduated last spring, joined Newman on the All-American podium with a fifth-place finish at 125 pounds.

UW-Whitewater begins the season against WIAC foe UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Kachel Gymnasium.

After heading to the Luther (Iowa) Open on Nov. 11, the team returns to conference action with a dual at UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 16.

The Warhawks travel to the Concordia Wisconsin Open on Nov. 18 before hosting No. 9 UW-Platteville on Nov. 21. The team returns to action Dec. 2 at UW-La Crosse's Candlewood Suite Duals, where it'll face No. 1 Wartburg (Iowa), No. 2 Augsburg (Minn.) and Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.).

UW-Whitewater visits Division II UW-Parkside for the Sake Bottle Battle on Dec. 6 before hosting Division I Wisconsin on Dec. 9 at the Williams Center.

The Warhawks begin the New Year with the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals on Jan. 4-5 in Fort Wayne, Ind. After traveling to Manchester's Spartan Mat Classic on Jan. 13, the team returns home to face rival UW-La Crosse on Jan. 18.

UW-Whitewater will host the Willie Myers Open on Jan. 20, then head to Wheaton (Ill.) for the annual Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational on Jan. 26-27.

A dual against UW-Eau Claire at home on Jan. 30 and a trip to the Don Parker Open in Eau Claire wrap up the regular season schedule.

The WIAC Championships, which will be hosted by the Warhawks, are scheduled for Feb. 9, and are followed by the NCAA Midwest Regional (Feb. 23-24) and the NCAA Championships (March 9-10) in Cleveland, Ohio.

Six of UW-Whitewater's 10 starters from last year's NCAA Regional are slated to return in 2017-18.

Newman (184 pounds) swept the national, regional and conference individual championships last season en route to a 24-3 record with 10 pins, two technical falls and four major decisions. He is the top ranked wrestler at 184 by both the NWCA and D3wrestle.com entering the season.

Sophomore Devin Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) finished his rookie campaign as an NWCA Scholar All-American and national qualifier at 141 pounds. He finished second in the region and third in the WIAC, and tallied a 17-8 record after joining the team midway through the year. Tortorice is ranked sixth in the nation at 141 by D3wrestle.com.

Senior Austin Quartullo (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) fell one victory shy of being a national qualifier at 157 a year ago after placing fourth at the NCAA Regional. He finished third in the WIAC and posted a season record of 28-13 with six pins and is listed as a "Contender" by D3wrestle.com entering the new campaign.

Junior Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) moved down to 174 pounds last season, placing fourth in the WIAC and collecting a 19-9 record with nine pins. He was the WIAC champion at 184 in 2016. Bonomo is ranked as a "Contender" by D3wrestle.com entering the year.

Other returning regional starters include sophomores Riley Kauzlaric (Coal City, Ill./Coal City) and Mike Kouvelis (Fox Lake, Ill./Grant Community). Both Kouvelis (165 pounds) and Kauzlaric (197) posted 2-2 records at the regional tournament. Kauzlaric totaled a 16-18 record, while Kouvelis finished at 24-17 with 11 pins.

Returning competitors from last season's WIAC Championships include juniors Christian Dischler(Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee), Jordan Festge (Madison, Wis./Madison East), Nate Mlodzik (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek), Sonny Schieldt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton), sophomores Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg), Ryder Sigler (Fredonia, Wis./Cedarburg), Nick Sundberg (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock)and Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel).

Tortorice (125) finished third in the WIAC and registered a 25-7 record with eight pins. Rice (133), listed as a "Contender" by D3wrestle.com, concluded the year with a 25-12 mark with 10 pins after finishing fifth at the conference tournament.

Sundberg (197) recorded an 18-16 mark with six pins, and Dischler (184) was 11-14 with four pins. Mlodzik (165) tallied a 19-18 record with five pins, and Sigler (174) collected 13 wins in his rookie campaign.

Festge (285) recorded seven wins, including two pins, and Schieldt (157) finished with one win.

Other returners include juniors Nick Stencel (Oregon, Ohio/Clay), Isaiah Vela, sophomores Nick Graziano(Midlothian, Ill./Oak Forest), Zachary Hasselberger and Eric Khondaker.

Vela claimed a WIAC championship and was a national qualifier at 149 pounds back in 2016. He enters the 2017-18 season with a career record of 59-13 and is ranked seventh at 149 by D3wrestle.com.
