Beloit Native Malizio Named to 2016-17 UW-Whitewater Men's Swimming and Diving Roster

Jarrett Malizio, a native of Beloit , WI, and graduate of Beloit Memorial High School, will compete for the 2016-17 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's swimming and diving team, which begins its season this Saturday at the All-Wisconsin Invitational.

Malizio, a sophomore at UW-Whitewater, is majoring in business.

The Warhawks enter the season after matching the program's highest-ever finish at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The team placed second for the first time since 1970.

In addition, five-time WIAC champion Josh Kanute (Geneva, Ill./Marmion Academy) qualified for the 500-yard freestyle and competed in the 200-yard butterfly at the NCAA Division III Championships.

Head coach Joel Rollings, who is in his 11th year at the helm of the program, is a three-time WIAC Men's Coach of the Year. He has led UW-Whitewater to 21 individual conference championships and 34 school-record marks during his tenure.

Following this weekend's All-Wisconsin Invite, the Warhawks host Carroll on Nov. 4 at the Williams Center. The team opens against WIAC competition Nov. 12 at UW-Oshkosh, then continues in conference one week later at home against defending league champion UW-Stevens Point.

UW-Whitewater resumes action Dec. 2-3 at the Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational, then heads to Puerto Rico in early January for its annual training trip.

The Warhawks visit Lake Forest (Ill.) for a tri-meet on Jan. 21 and UW-Eau Claire for a dual meet on Jan. 28. The team hosts UW-La Crosse on Feb. 4 for its last meet of the regular season.

The WIAC Championships are scheduled for Feb. 16-18 at Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis., the site of this weekend's season-opening invitational.

Kanute highlights a strong senior class set to return to the pool this year. He won the 200-yard freestyle conference title and earned second team All-WIAC in the 200-yard butterfly, 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay. Kanute is the current school record holder in the 200 and 500 freestyle events and is a part of two record-setting relay teams.

Other returning seniors include Dan Bielski (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka), Sam Bowman (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska), Alex Carroll (Downers Grove, Ill./North), Alex Gidlow (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley), Paul Hill (Jefferson, Wis./Fort Atkinson) and Andrew Staszak (Franklin, Wis./Greendale).

Hill joined Kanute on the podium for the runner-up 400 freestyle relay finish, and placed among the top eight in three other freestyle sprints, including one relay.

Bielski placed third in the 200-yard backstroke, fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly, and was a part of a pair of top four medley relay finishes at the WIAC Championships.

Bowman placed among the top eight in three freestyle events, including a fifth-place showing in the 1,650-yard race. Carroll was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke, while Gidlow was seventh in the 100-yard backstroke and was a member of the fourth place 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Staszak finished sixth in the 1,650-yard freestyle and seventh in the 400-yard individual medley.

Returning juniors include David Joerres (New Berlin, Wis./St. Thomas More), Andrew Langenhahn (Appleton, Wis./East), Kevin Lotzer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove), Steven Missak (Naperville, Ill./North) and diver Tony Benz (Wauwatosa, Wis./West).

Missak finished eighth in the WIAC in the 1,650-yard freestyle, while Benz placed seventh in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

Several talented sophomores are slated to return this season, including Patrick Abrahams (Highland Park, Ill./Deerfield), Sam Amundson (Janesville, Wis./Parker), Justin Harrington (McFarland, Wis./McFarland), Jonathan Jaworski (Waukesha, Wis./South), Chandler Lewis (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg), Peter Loftus (Janesville, Wis./Craig), Jarrett Malizio (Beloit, Wis./Memorial), Thomas Stigler (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego) and diver Dallas O'Haver (Racine, Wis./Park).

Loftus garnered second team All-WIAC accolades as part of the 400-yard freestyle relay. He also placed fourth in both the 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard individual medley, and was sixth in the 200-yard backstroke. Loftus was also part of the fourth-place 200-yard medley relay team.

Stigler was tabbed second team all-conference after placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke at the championship meet. He was third in the 200-yard breaststroke, and was a member of the fourth-place 200-yard medley relay team.

Jaworski was part of fourth-place finishes in both the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay, while Lewis was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, fifth in the 200-yard backstroke and fifth in the 400-yard individual medley.
