Algonquin Native DeLuga Selected All-Conference for UW-Whitewater Women's Soccer

2016 Nov 8

Payton DeLuga, a native of Algonquin, IL, and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team, was one of eight members of the Warhawk program to earn recognition from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for her performance during the 2016 season.

Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and Carina Krausert (Delafield, Wis./Catholic Memorial) were named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, while Quamme was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Reid, a senior forward, is the second player in school history to earn Player of the Year honors in three consecutive seasons. She is also a four-time First Team honoree after scoring three goals and one assist against conference opponents. For the season she added 12 goals and five assists to her career totals to become the school's all-time leading point scorer (135) and goal scorer (59). She also notched her third collegiate hat trick back on September 9th in an 11-0 win over Brooklyn College. Reid, a four-year starter for the Warhawks, leads the conference in shots and shots per game and ranks among the top ten in points, points per game, goals, goals per game and game-winning goals.

Krausert, a senior captain and defender, is the second Warhawk to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors. A two time All-WIAC selection, Krausert switched from forward to defender last season and remained on the backline for her final year with the Warhawks. Krausert has provided stability and leadership for an otherwise young defense. She started every game this season and scored her lone goal in a 2-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire. She also played an integral part in UW-W's five shutouts against conference teams.

Joining Reid and Krausert on the All-WIAC team is fellow senior Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East), juniors Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) and Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie), sophomore Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) and freshman Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy).

For the third time in her four year career, Pottle is an all-conference honoree. The senior forwardis always involved in the offensive action, registering three goals and one assist in seven conference games. The captain notched one goal and one assist in the Warhawks' final regular season game against UW-Stevens Point. She also scored a game-winner against UW-River Falls.

Lesperance, a junior midfielder, earns all-conference honors for the second season in a row. Lesperance ranks second in league-only statistics in goals (4) and third in points (9). Two of her goals were game-winners; one against UW-Stout and the other against UW-Stevens Point. She also tallied a goal and an assist in a home game against UW-River Falls.

This is the second time Serbousek, a sophomore midfielder, has earned All-WIAC honors. Serbousek, a regular starter for UW-W, offers a solid presence on the attack and on defense. Serbousek is a reliable defender and has been instrumental in holding WIAC opponents to very few quality shots on goal. She has scored three goals and recorded one assist this season.

DeLuga, a first time All-WIAC pick, started every game for the Warhawks this season. Head coach Ryan Quamme rarely takes the sophomore defender out of the game, trusting her abilities and leadership on the backline. She was a part of a defensive effort that held five of seven WIAC opponents scoreless. At one point UW-W the league opposition scoreless for 416 minutes and 10 seconds. DeLuga even got in on the offensive action scoring her only two goals of the season in a 2-0 win over UW-Platteville on the road.

Klimisch, the Warhawks' freshman goalkeeper, appears on the all-conference list after recording three solo and one shared shutout against conference opponents this year. Klimisch boasts a 0.59 goals against average and a save percentage of 85.0%. Aided by an experienced backline, Klimisch totaled 17 saves against WIAC foes, including a high of six against UW-Eau Claire.

Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) is one of the seven members of the All-Sportsmanship Team. Schueler started every game this season for the Warhawks and scored her first collegiate goal of the season in UW-W's WIAC Tournament semifinal match against UW-Oshkosh.

This is the eighth year in a row that a UW-Whitewater women's soccer player has earned Player of the Year honors. Prior to 2011, the league elected only one player for the honor, after that, one was picked for each offense and defense. Emily Gerber won the award in 2009 and 2010 and was named Offensive Player of the Year in 2011. Christina Tooren, Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls)and Reid (twice) earned Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. The Warhawks swept the Player of the Year honors in 2014 when Sarah Sedlar earned Defensive Player of the Year.

Quamme, in his fifth year at the helm, has led the Warhawks to four regular season WIAC titles, four WIAC Tournament titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances. He is 91-16-5 during his tenure for a remarkable .835 winning percentage.

UW-Whitewater won both the regular season and WIAC Tournament crowns. Along with the league's tournament title comes an automatic bid into the NCAA DIII tournament. UW-Whitewater will host the first and second rounds of NCAA play this weekend. The Warhawks will face Minnesota-Morris in their first round game. The other first round game will feature Loras (Iowa) and St. Thomas (Minn.). The winners will square off on Sunday.
